ACT Greens MLAs Visit Project Independence to Learn About Inclusive Housing

At Project Independence, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the security, dignity and independence that comes with having a home of their own.
Recently, we were pleased to welcome Rebecca Vassarotti MLA, Member for Kurrajong, and Laura Nuttall MLA, Member for Brindabella, to one of our Canberra residences.
The visit provided an opportunity for Rebecca and Laura to learn more about Project Independence and see our supported homeownership model in action.
Seeing independent living in action
Our resident Campbell welcomed Rebecca and Laura to his home and showed them around the property, sharing his experience of living at Project Independence.
Hearing directly from a resident provides an important perspective on what homeownership and independent living can mean for a person with intellectual disability.
At Project Independence, residents have their own homes within a supportive community. Our model provides a pathway to home ownership while supporting residents to develop skills, confidence, and greater independence.
For Campbell, having his own home is about more than having a place to live. It is about having choice, security, and a place he can proudly call home.
Creating more housing options for people with intellectual disabilities
Finding suitable and affordable housing can be challenging for people with intellectual disabilities. Traditional housing options do not always provide the choice, security, or pathway to ownership that people and their families are looking for.
Project Independence offers an innovative approach.
Our supported homeownership model is designed to help people with intellectual disabilities live more independently, build equity in their home, and be part of an inclusive community.
Visits such as this provide an opportunity to share what we have learned through our experience and to highlight the importance of creating more housing pathways for people with intellectual disabilities.
