Cooking Up Confidence: Building Independence Through Everyday Life Skills
Mon Sep 21 2026
Sometimes, independence starts in the kitchen.
Our Harrison residents have recently begun a series of cooking classes with Embrace Disability Group, creating opportunities to learn practical life skills, try new recipes and enjoy time together.
Learning skills for everyday living
Cooking is an everyday activity, but it can also be a valuable opportunity to develop confidence and independence.
During the sessions, residents are learning how to prepare ingredients, follow recipes, and work together to create meals.
These are practical skills that can support people in their everyday lives and contribute to greater independence at home and in the community.
But the sessions are about more than cooking.

Building confidence and connection
Trying something new can be a great way to build confidence.
The cooking classes provide a relaxed and supportive environment where residents can learn at their own pace, share experiences, and celebrate their achievements together.
Working alongside other residents also creates opportunities for conversation, connection, and friendship.
At Project Independence, we believe independent living is about having the opportunity to develop skills, make choices, and build confidence in everyday life.
For our residents, activities like these are part of that journey.

More than just a cooking class
Our residents are building practical skills while also enjoying time together as a community.
It is a great example of how everyday activities can support the broader goals of independent living — from developing confidence and practical skills to strengthening community connections.
A big thank you to the team at Embrace Disability Group for creating such an engaging and supportive experience for our Harrison residents.
We can't wait to see what everyone cooks up next!
