Project Independence is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Whittaker to its Board of Directors.

Matthew is a Director in the EY Canberra Tax Practice and a Registered Tax Agent specialising in the not-for-profit sector. He advises charities, social enterprises, government entities and purpose-driven organisations on governance, taxation, compliance and strategic growth, helping organisations deliver sustainable outcomes while navigating complex regulatory environments.

Matthew has a longstanding connection with Project Independence, having advised on the organisation's establishment and structure. His expertise in taxation and GST supported the development of Project Independence's innovative housing model, helping lay the foundations for an organisation that continues to create greater independence and home ownership opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

Beyond his professional role, Matthew has a strong commitment to social enterprise and community impact. He previously chaired the Canberra Business Chamber Social Enterprise Taskforce, supporting the growth of social enterprise opportunities across the ACT, and has worked extensively with organisations focused on delivering lasting social outcomes.

Matthew also brings significant governance experience, currently serving on the Board of the Canberra Hospitals Foundation, where he chairs the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee. His expertise in taxation, finance, risk management and governance will strengthen Project Independence's leadership as the organisation continues to grow and expand its impact.

Project Independence warmly welcomes Matthew to the Board and looks forward to the expertise, insight and leadership he will bring in supporting the organisation's mission to create greater independence and housing choice for people with intellectual disabilities.
