Understanding Supported Homeownership: How It Works at Project Independence

Tue Apr 29 2025

At Project Independence (PI), we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the pride, security, and dignity that comes with owning a home — including people with intellectual disabilities. Our Supported Homeownership model is designed to turn that belief into reality.

But what exactly is Supported Homeownership, and how does it work at PI? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is Supported Homeownership?

Supported Homeownership is a unique model that empowers people with intellectual disabilities to purchase and own their own homes — with the right structures in place to help them live independently, safely, and confidently. Unlike traditional rental or group housing models, Supported Homeownership at PI gives individuals the stability of ownership and the life-changing sense of control over their living environment.

How It Works at PI

Our model is built around three key pillars: ownership, community, and support.

1. Ownership

Participants in the PI program purchase a share in a property, giving them legal ownership of their home. This model is tailored to be affordable and sustainable, often made possible through a combination of personal savings, government support, and assistance from family or guardians. By owning a part of their home, participants build equity over time — providing a financial foundation for their future.

2. Community

At each PI development, small clusters of units are grouped together, fostering a strong sense of community. Residents live independently but alongside peers, creating a built-in support network of neighbors who understand and share similar life experiences. This sense of belonging is vital in promoting wellbeing, confidence, and personal growth.

3. Support

While residents live independently, support is always close at hand. Each PI community is supported by an "Assistant Support Coordinator," who helps residents connect to the services they need — whether that’s daily living assistance, financial guidance, or health and wellbeing services. Importantly, support is flexible and tailored to each individual's needs and preferences, empowering them to live the life they choose.

Why It Matters

For many people with intellectual disabilities, traditional housing options can feel limiting and dependent. PI’s Supported Homeownership model breaks that cycle by promoting choice, stability, and financial empowerment. Homeownership becomes more than just having a roof overhead — it becomes a symbol of independence, self-determination, and long-term security.
The impact of this model is transformative:

  • Residents gain pride and confidence through homeownership.
  • Families experience peace of mind knowing their loved ones have safe, stable, and supportive housing for life.
  • Our communities thrive as inclusive, welcoming spaces where everyone is empowered to contribute and belong.

Building a Future Together

Since our founding, Project Independence has proudly supported dozens of individuals in achieving the dream of homeownership. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to creating more opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to live independently, own their future, and be active, valued members of their communities.

Because at PI, we don’t just build houses.
We build independence.
We build futures.
We build community.
